Note that in OpenWrt builds the ar71xx targets require target-specific firmware (that is, most devices need customised firmware). The kernel is patched with the command line that has the board name in it. This is like ramips boards, which need to have a dts file embedded, so they're board-specific too. But is there some more detailed information regarding "modernizing the Atheros AR71xx target."? What does it mean in detail? I am wondering if I should rather use my Archer C7 instead of the R7800 - if there are massive removed ath10k because the 5 GHz hardware, QCA9880-AR1A, is unsupported and boot loops kmod-ath10k ath10k-firmware-qca988x 5 GHz radio decommissioned, but router works.
